MBYC – The Anchor

In certain times of trouble there is nothing more important than having a good anchor. Without your engine running it is the only brake you have. When you do need to use it you need to make sure ahead of time it is the right type, size, and weight and has the proper attachments to do the job. A good knowledge of knots insures you do not lose it because of improper attachment.

Anchor checklist

The anchor has to be big enough to hold your boat stationary when your engine is broke down or you are mooring for a night. You have to include weight of boat, design of boat (how high it sits above the water ( how much wind it catches),number of people normally on board, weight of full tank of gas and all accessories on board for your decision on size of anchor.

The anchor attachments include a good strong rope with proper attachment loop, shackles, a long enough chain(rode) to keep the chain digging into sand etc. General rule is one foot of chain for every foot of boat. Make sure rope length is out far enough to let chain lay flat on bottom surface.

Anchor types are Mushroom Grapel Danforth, Bruce, Fluke and Delta They are galvanised or the really expensive stainless steel.

Before you need it try it and see if it holds good under full load and strong current. Your friends and family will be grateful in times of trouble.

Be patient and courteous to our staff. They are there to help but sometimes they are very busy.

Have a great boating season!!
